Is Facebook bringing you down? There are some surveys that show that users of Facebook seem to be less happy and tended to have a more negative outlook on life. While some have challenged the survey as inaccurate, we believe that it is accurate but not for the reasons they postulate.
What many people do not realise is that Facebook's algorithm is designed to find and show you more of what you like. How Facebook does this is to track what you click on and then find and show you related contents. So, for example, if you click on All Singapore Stuff (which is a well known anti-government site that distorts the truth to show the sad lives of Singaporeans) Facebook will find and show you all the stories about how sad life is in Singapore. And, if you continue to click and view these contents, Facebook will find you even more. This is a vicious cycle and it will eventually reach a stage where your Facebook news feed is inundated with nothing but stories about having a sad life in Singapore. It will therefore not be surprising that you then begin to think that life in Singapore is sad.
Breaking the vicious cycle is easy ... You just need to keep in mind that Facebook's algorithm is designed to show you more of what you like to see. Hence, if you click on a story about how sad life is in Singapore you will therefore tend to see only these type of stories. To break the cycle, all you need to do, is to click on positive stories. In a short time, you will also be receive positive stories in your news feed and your perspective of life in Singapore will be more balanced.
In summary, Facebook is not bringing you down. It can't. It is merely a machine. So be careful what you click on. There are consequences.
